Complete Dentures

What is a denture?

People wear dentures to replace lost or missing teeth so they can enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence.

Dentures are made of either acrylic (plastic) or metal. A 'complete' or 'full' denture is one which replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaws.

Full dentures, to replace all your own teeth, fit snugly over your gums.

They will help you to eat comfortably and speak clearly, and will improve your confidence.

How long will my dentures last?

So long as you treat your dentures well, they should last several years.

However, your dentures will need to be relined or re-made due to normal wear or a change in the shape of your mouth.

Bone and gum ridges can shrink, causing your jaws to meet differently. Loose dentures can cause health problems, including sores and infections, not to mention discomfort.

A loose or ill-fitting denture can also make eating and talking more difficult.

It is important to replace worn or poorly fitting dentures before they cause problems.

Denture repairs

We can usually repair cracked or fractured dentures, insert strengtheners into dentures. We can also repair chips in the artificial teeth or replace ones that have broken off.

Most denture repairs we aim to do while you wait. They usually take between an hour and an hour and a half depending on the type of repair required

If the denture has suffered a more serious fracture, however, it will take longer to repair.

If your dentures are quite old and have broken several times, it may be necessary to have a new set made. Dentures that have had teeth added or fractured multiple times are generally not very comfortable to wear as they no longer fit that well.

What should you do if your denture breaks?

If possible, keep all the broken pieces together. Don't use super glue or try and repair the denture yourself.

Attempting to repair it yourself may end up resulting in further damage and make your denture impossible to repair again and uncomfortable to wear.

It is always advisable to have your denture fixed by a qualified professional who has the correct knowledge and equipment to do a good job.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are usually made to replace one or more teeth. T

hey can be made entirely from plastic, or from a mixture of plastic and light alloy.

They are attached to your remaining natural teeth with metal clasps or flexible tooth coloured clasps.

Precision attachments can also be used which are much more discreet than clasping.

Why is it important to have missing teeth replaced?

The health of your remaining teeth may suffer if some of your teeth are missing. They can change position and move into the gaps.

Partial dentures prevent your natural teeth from shifting and moving into unsightly positions. In fact, a partial denture may help maintain the position of your natural teeth by providing them with additional support, improving the overall health of your mouth.

What are the benefits of metal alloy partial dentures?

Metal alloy partial dentures are usually made from an alloy of chromium cobalt and are much stronger than plastic ones.

They are also more comfortable to wear and won't damage the gums surrounding the teeth that they are attached to, which can sometimes happen with plastic partial dentures.

The metal base of the partial denture is used to hold the gum coloured plastic base, so they look very natural and discreet.

Denture Relining

A reline is when the CDT/Denturist takes an impression of your mouth using your current denture and takes it back to his laboratory.

There he removes the interior structure of the denture and bonds a new layer of denture material to the inside of the denture. This new layer of denture material is form fitted to your mouth to help improve your denture, and overall fit.

The new material that is placed in your denture does not change the appearance of your denture on the outside, but helps to maintain a healthy bite, strong chewing forces in your jaws, and a healthy smile.

Denture relines are necessary in order to accomplish several goals.

Increasing retention and tightness of old, existing dentures or new dentures that, for one reason or another have lost retention.  Sometimes this may be due to recent extraction’s or alteration in the gum tissue due  to natural shrinkage.

Dentures constantly breaking in half

Relining of old dentures hoping to avoid the necessity of remaking them entirely.

To help reduce soreness to the gums that is caused by loose fitting or rocking dentures. Linersallow your abused gum tissue to return to a proper state of health.
